New Delhi, July 23 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the states and Union territories to consider raising the age of superannuation of judicial officers from 60 to 61 years and state their stand within two weeks. The order came even as the apex court allowed judicial officers in states and UTs to continue in service till the age of 61 years, subject to agreement between the state government and the concerned high court and the final outcome of the proceedings. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant passed the order on an application moved by All India Judges Association (AIJA) which alleged discrimination with regard to retirement age as judicial officers in states such as Madhya Pradesh and Telangana retire at the age of 61. Posting the matter on August 5, the bench, also comprising justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said that till the court takes a final call on the issue, the judicial officers retiring in those states/UTs can avail the benefit of the enhanced age with effect from April 1, 2026. htc...
