Congress holds statewide protestagainst arrest of party activist
Chandigarh, June 7 -- Congress workers across Punjab staged protests on Saturday against the arrest of party worker Arshdeep Singh in Tanda, Hoshiarpur district on May 30 for allegedly showing "disrespect" to the broom symbol of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
As a mark of protest and defiance of the police action, Congress workers in several parts of the state symbolically disassembled brooms, asserting their support for the arrested activist.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring condemned the arrest, describing it as a "dictatorial" and "authoritarian" move by the Punjab government.
He alleged that the action reflected the AAP government's growing frustration and insecurity.
"Arshdeep Singh was arrested merely for a symbolic act of political resistance. Such actions expose the government's intolerance towards opposition voices," Warring said.
Drawing a comparison with pending sacrilege cases, Warring accused the AAP government of acting swiftly against a political worker while failing to deliver justice in incidents involving the sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib.
He recalled that AAP leaders had promised action within 24 hours of coming to power but claimed that no significant progress had been made despite being in office for more than four years.
