Cong workers protest, accuse govt of vendetta politics
Mohali, June 9 -- Senior Congress leader and former Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu led a protest in Mohali on Monday morning, accusing the Punjab government of pursuing vendetta politics and suppressing democratic voices. Party workers marched from Sector 78 towards the office of MLA Kulwant Singh in Sector 79 but were halted by police.
Addressing supporters, Sidhu alleged that the AAP government attempted to silence criticism through intimidation and misuse of the police machinery.
As a symbolic protest, Congress workers scattered brooms on the road, claiming it reflected growing public disillusionment with the ruling party. Sidhu referred to the recent arrest of a Congress worker in Tanda over the alleged disrespect of a broom and questioned the government's priorities, alleging that action against political opponents was being taken more swiftly than in cases of sacrilege.
He also criticised the police action against protesting PSPCL employees in Patiala, describing it as an example of the government's authoritarian approach.
Warning of a wider agitation, Sidhu said Congress would continue to oppose what it termed anti-democratic actions and would launch a state-wide movement if the government failed to end its alleged politics of intimidation.
