Chandigarh, Sept. 29 -- Residents experienced a palpable nip in the air on Monday as the day temperature plummeted to 25.4degC, a five degree drop from the day before, owing to 9.4 mm rain brought about by an active western disturbance. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said this was the coldest September day recorded in the city since 2021 (see box). The city was colder than Dharamshala, where the maximum stood at 26degC while hill stations such as Shimla and Manali remained colder at 16.8degC and 16.5degC respectively. The city's minimum dropped to 22.1degC, from 23.2degC on Sunday. IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul explained, "The cloud cover during the early hours, the drizzle through the day and the season's first snow in parts of Himachal Pradesh, brought the city's temperatures down. The city being on the foothills of the Himalayas received cold winds from there." He added that the western disturbance is likely to weaken from Tuesday while clear skies can be expected from Wednesday.
