Centre SEEKS FASTER decision On SOCIAL MEDIA USER COMPLAINTS
New Delhi, July 11 -- The Centre has asked major social media platforms to speed up the resolution of thousands of pending user grievances, with officials flagging Meta, specifically Instagram, as accounting for one of the largest share of unresolved complaints, according to a government official familiar with the matter.
Representatives from Meta, X, Google, LinkedIn, Telegram and Snapchat were called toa meeting by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday after the government observed a growing backlog ofcitizen complaints, the official said.
"Meta has the highest pendencies, about 9,000, with around 95% of them relatedto Instagram's account blocking."
The government's concern, the official said, is not that platforms remove accounts, but that users often receive generic responses that do not adequately explain why action was taken. Meta did not immediately respond to HT's request for comment. Sejal Sharma...
