Chandigarh, May 15 -- Punjab finance minister Harpal Cheema on Thursday claimed that states ruled by the BJP have seen a surge in gangsterism and a breakdown of law and order. Addressing a press conference here, Cheema said that Delhi currently tops the national crime chart with a rate of 1,602 per lakh population, followed by Gujarat at 806, Haryana at 739.2, and Madhya Pradesh at 570.3. Citing National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, he argued that Punjab's crime rate is considerably lower at 227.1, asserting that the state government has taken decisive steps to dismantle organised crime. Directing his criticism at Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, Cheema said while BJP leaders are quick to interfere in Punjab's internal affairs, they have consistently failed to secure their own states.
