BJP misusing constitutional institutions, alleges AAP
India, May 15 -- Hours after the schedule for SIR of electoral rolls in Punjab was announced, AAP leaders and cabinet ministers Aman Arora and Harpal Cheema on Thursday expressed serious concern over the "autonomy" and "neutrality" of the election commission. The two ministers alleged that constitutional institutions in the country were rapidly losing their impartial character under the BJP rule and were increasingly being misused to influence electoral outcomes in favour of the ruling party at the Centre.
Arora said that the functioning of the election commission had raised serious questions. "We saw it in the Delhi assembly elections, where thousands of BJP-favoured votes were manufactured and AAP's genuine votes were cut," he alleged.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring questioned the timing of SIR with the state headed for assembly elections in less than 10 months. Reacting to the announcement, Warring said the exercise could have been conducted after the elections. "What is the urgency to hold this exercise in Punjab?" Warring said, alleging that the BJP government at the Centre, with a 'compliant EC', has used SIR in Bihar and West Bengal to swing the electoral outcomes.
He also questioned why the SIR exercise was not carried out in Punjab, along with states like Uttar Pradesh and Goa, all of which are scheduled to go to the polls at the same time....
