BJD suspends 6 MLAs days after they cross-voted in RS elections
Bhubaneswar, March 22 -- The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday suspended six of its legislators who had voted for BJP-backed independent candidate Dilip Ray in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha poll, and indicated it would move the Speaker seeking their disqualification while also challenging alleged procedural lapses before the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Those suspended by the party with immediate effect are Chakramani Kanhar (Baliguda), Naba Kishore Mallick (Jayadev), Souvic Biswal (Choudwar-Cuttack), Subasini Jena (Basta), Ramakanta Bhoi (Tirtol) and Devi Ranjan Tripathy (Banki).
They had voted in favour of BJP-supported Dilip Ray instead of the BJD-Congress joint nominee Datteswar Hota in the biennial election.
Though Ray and Hota got 23 first preference votes each, the former was elected to Rajya Sabha after counting of second preference votes.
The action was taken by BJD president and former CM Naveen Patnaik following recommendations from the party's political affairs committee (PAC) after examining replies to show-cause notices issued to the legislators....
