Bike stolen after accident as Kharar cops 'fail to act'
Mohali, July 9 -- A 29-year-old man's motorcycle was allegedly stolen after he met with an accident involving stray cattle on Airport Road near Sage Hospital late on July 6. His family claimed that even though they had informed the police that the damaged vehicle was lying unattended at the spot, nothing had been done to secure it.
Navit Hakhoo, a resident of Sector 125, Sunny Enclave, said he was returning home from work around 11.30 pm when his Royal Enfield Meteor 350 collided with a cow sitting in the middle of the road, about 200 metres before Sage Hospital. He alleged that poor street lighting on the stretch prevented him from noticing the animal in time, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle. The impact threw him into the air before he landed on his chest and stomach, suffering multiple injuries from his neck down to his legs.
Passersby stopped to help and informed his family. Hakhoo was taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh, for treatment. His family said their immediate priority was to ensure he received medical care.
According to the family, they informed the police that the motorcycle was lying at the accident site and requested that it be shifted to a safe place. A PCR team reached the spot, but the motorcycle was not removed as the team did not have a vehicle to tow it away.
When the family returned to the spot between 6 am and 7 am on July 7, the motorcycle was missing. The family subsequently lodged a complaint with the police regarding the missing vehicle.
The motorcycle is a sky blue and cream Royal Enfield Meteor 350 bearing registration number CH-01-CW-7730. The injured cow was also rescued and taken for treatment. The incident occurred on a stretch where closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are installed and police personnel remain deployed during busy hours. The alleged theft of the motorcycle after police had been informed has raised questions about the handling of vehicles involved in road accidents. Deputy superintendent of police Ishan Singla said, "We have taken note of the incident, and an investigating officer has been assigned to trace the missing motorcycle. A PCR team had reached the accident site, but as it did not have a vehicle to tow away the motorcycle, it could not be shifted."...
