Azam, son get bail in 'dual PAN cards' case
Prayagraj, Oct. 30 -- The Allahabad High Court on Thursday granted bail to former Uttar Pradesh minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son, former MLA Abdullah Azam Khan, by suspending their seven-year sentences in the alleged double PAN card case. However, the court refused to stay their convictions, disqualifying them from contesting polls.
Justice Samit Gopal rejected their plea for a stay on conviction, citing their criminal antecedents, previous convictions and involvement in several criminal cases.
"Looking at the criminal antecedents of the accused/revisionists, their previous conviction(s), involvement in a large number of criminal cases, no justifiable reason is coming forward for entertaining the plea for suspension of conviction," the court observed.
The court added that it did not find the case fit for granting a stay on the convictions of Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam Khan.
The two are likely to walk out of jail following the suspension of their sentences.
Under the law, a person sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more is disqualified from contesting elections. htc...
