India, Oct. 25 -- A ctor Avantika Malik is opening up about her divorce from actor Imran Khan, seven years after their split. She has revealed that it was Imran who initially wanted to end their marriage. "I would have never done it. Probably to my own detriment, but I would have never done it. It was his decision," she said on actor Soha Ali Khan's podcast. She explained that Imran had initially suggested that they "take some time apart". Six months later, the two mutually agreed that divorce was the way forward. Reflecting on the emotional toll of the separation, Avantika said, "It is like death. It is a death of the way you perceived your life to be, or what you imagined your life would be, or how it would play out. It's the death of probably the most intimate relationship inyour life." Avantika was 19 when she met Imran, and the two tied the knot six years later in 2011. They welcomed daughter, Imaara in 2014. Looking back, she said that being young had shaped their expectations, sometimes at its expense. "At such a tender age, you don't even realise that it's your own responsibility. It's like, 'Oh, this person is in front of me, and they are responsible for me being happy and content.' You don't realise that over the years, you end up damaging the relationshipdue to unrealistic expectations," she said. She added, "Somewhere along the way, I think we were unfair to each other, so I can't say it was one big incident. I think small things over the years." Despite her disappointment over how things ended, the 39-year-old said she looks back with pride on the years they spent together. "I feel like we did it for 18 years, through being kids, fame, failure, success, all kinds of things. So I am proud of the two of us. I am a little disappointed in how our relationship ended, but I feel like if you can do your best for 18 years and kind of build a family, it is a success," she said.
