Mussoorie, May 25 -- A snow avalanche occurred near the Kanchanganga area in Chamoli district on Sunday morning, officials said, adding that the Badrinath pilgrimage route remains safe and unaffected. The incident took place around 10 am when snow and ice slid down from upper ridges into the valley. Officials said the avalanche was triggered by natural snow accumulation and fracturing in higher reaches. The area is around 5 kms from Badrinath Dham temple According to superintendent of police (SP) Chamoli Surjeet Singh Panwar, debris from the avalanche reached near the highway zone but caused no damage or disruption to traffic movement. He said there is no threat to the main highway and the ongoing dry weather conditions have further reduced the risk of blockage. He said that the Badrinath Yatra is continuing smoothly. District authorities said monitoring of the area is ongoing and no further snow movement has been reported.
