Chandigarh, July 29 -- The city recorded 47.3 mm rainfall on Tuesday, the highest recorded in a single day so far this year and the maximum single-day rain for the month of July in the past three years. With chances of heavy rain at isolated stretches across the tricity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has continued its orange alert for Wednesday, asking residents to remain cautious. Of the total rain recorded during the day, 1.7 mm was recorded till 8.30 am, while 45.6 mm fell between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. The maximum temperature dropped by 5.2 degrees Celsius within 24 hours - from 34.8degC on Monday to 29.6degC on Tuesday. A six-year-old boy drowned in a pond in Bad Majra village on Tuesday afternoon while playing with his friends. Police said the pond had recently been deepened as part of the Amrit Sarovar project. The morning downpour filled the excavation with water, they added. According to the family, the boy left home to play with three other children in the afternoon. The children reached the pond and entered the water. During play, the boy moved into a deeper section and drowned. The other children returned home without informing anyone about the incident. The family began searching for the child after he did not return home. The victim's mother questioned the children who had accompanied him. They initially remained silent but later told villagers that the boy had fallen into the water. The victim's father jumped into the water and pulled his son's body out after a search. Villagers tried to revive the child and rushed him to the Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali. Doctors examined him and declared him dead. The victim's father said the boy was the youngest of his four children....
