At 34 mm, city sees season's highest rain; more in store today
Chandigarh, July 10 -- The city recorded its highest rainfall of the ongoing monsoon season on Thursday, with 34 mm rain recorded at the Sector 39 observatory of India Meteorological Department (IMD) till 5.30 pm. The airport observatory recorded 32.6 mm rain.
The MeT has forecast similar conditions on Friday and issued a yellow alert for heavy rain at isolated places.
IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul said Thursday's rain fell under the moderate category.
"Similar conditions are expected on Friday, though the intensity is likely to reduce. There may be intermittent showers during the day, but rainfall activity is expected to decrease gradually. Weather conditions are likely to improve after Saturday," he said.
The rainfall also brought down temperatures. The maximum temperature settled at 28.9 degrees Celsius, 5.5 degrees below normal and 3.1 degrees lower than Wednesday, while the minimum dipped to 24.4 degrees Celsius from 25.6 degrees Celsius over the previous two days.
Thursday's 34 mm rain surpassed the season's previous highest of 21.7 mm, recorded on June 12. It was, however, lower than the highest single-day rainfall recorded in recent years - 39.2 mm on July 31, 2025, and 64.5 mm on July 3, 2024.
Chandigarh's all-time highest single-day monsoon rain remains 302.2 mm, recorded on July 9, 2023, which triggered widespread flooding and severe disruption.
As per IMD classification, rain between 15.6 mm and 64.4 mm in 24 hours is categorised as moderate, while 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is classified as heavy rainfall....
