Are you dead yet? Chinese safety 'check' app for solo dwellers
India, Jan. 15 -- With its bizarre name and minimalist interface, a new Chinese app called 'Are You Dead Yet?'- known in China as Sileme - has quickly gained attention. Built for people living alone, it serves a simple purpose: users must tap a button once every 24 hours to confirm they are alive. If two consecutive days pass without a check-in, it automatically alerts a pre-selected emergency contact, requesting an in-person welfare check. Created by a Gen Z developer, the app resonates with China's growing solo-living, often isolated population.
Earlier this week, the makers announced the app will be renamed 'Demumu' for a global audience, drawing from the word "death" and the cute Labubu-inspired branding. First launched as a free app, it has now made its way into the paid category - albeit at the low price of 8 yuan (approx. Rs.99).
