Anupam Kher returns to Bengali cinema after 26 yrs
India, June 28 -- Actor-filmmaker Anupam Kher is returning to Bengali cinema as a producer after 26 years with Shuru Theke Shuru, directed by debutant Shamik Banerjee. The film, co-produced with Firdausul Hasan, stars Rahul Bose, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Paoli Dam and Sneha Paul. Its logo and teaser were unveiled at an event in Kolkata on Friday.
Kher last produced a Bengali film in 2000, when he backed Rituparno Ghosh's Bariwali, starring Kirron Kher. Kirron, Kher's wife, had won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
Speaking at the launch, Kher said the new film's title, which loosely translates to "starting from the beginning", felt apt. "It is a new beginning for all of us," he said. He also said he met the chief minister earlier in the day and was assured support for locations, permissions and other production needs.
The announcement comes at a time when sections of the Bengali film industry have raised concerns over stalled shoots, low investment and work disruptions linked to technicians' bodies.
