Kolkata, Sept. 23 -- The Calcutta high court on Tuesday told the West Bengal government to allow Milan Pradhan, the Congress candidate in the Nandigram assembly, to contest the upcoming bypolls on condition of him getting bail in the five cases for which he has been arrested and was sent to judicial custody, according to the Congress leader's counsel. Pradhan's counsel said a bail petition will be moved in the high court on Wednesday. "The bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya orally remarked to the state to allow Pradhan to contest the by-elections if he gets bail in the cases in which he has already been arrested," Ajitesh Pandey, Pradhan's counsel told HT. Pradhan was initially arrested on Friday in connection with a 2007 murder case, hours after former chief minister Mamata Banerjee declared that her party would back Pradhan in the October 6 bypolls. He was later shown arrested in four other cases pending against him. At least 11 cases, including six murder cases, were registered against Pradhan in 2007. Banerjee's announcement came after her party's candidate, Sanchita Pradhan Dey, withdrew her nomination. Byelection in Nandigram was necessitated after Adhikari, who won from the assembly seat and Bhabanipur in the May assembly polls, decided to retain Bhabanipur and vacated Nandigram.HTC...
