India, Sept. 12 -- Anthropic, the AI safety and research company behind Claude, has caught the attention of prominent names, including badminton ace PV Sindhu, with its latest threat-intelligence report detailing alleged misuse of the AI tool across biological research, missile development, espionage and mass surveillance. The report covers malicious activity detected and disrupted between December 2025 and August 2026, showing how Anthropic's AI tools were pushed into potentially dangerous use. Biological research: A scientist used Claude to draft a proposal for research aimed at making chikungunya more infectious in live animals. Anthropic said the work appeared civilian but was meant for a military research institute. Rockets and missiles: In Yemen, a group used Claude Code while developing a guided rocket and ballistic missile system. The rocket was later test-fired but appears to have failed. Espionage: A Russia-linked actor allegedly used hotel Wi-Fi networks to plant malware targeting Ukrainian and European government and defence organisations. Mass surveillance: Iran-linked actors allegedly used Claude to profile and surveil thousands of Iranians, including opposition voices. The report has drawn attention because it shows how general-purpose AI tools can be repurposed for highly sensitive or harmful tasks. Anthropic said it released the findings to highlight such misuse and the need for stronger safeguards.
