ACP, SHO suspended for 'inaction' after back-to back firing incidents
Jalandhar, March 2 -- A day after two incidents of firing outside the residences of a doctor and a veterinarian in Jalandhar, two senior police officials were placed under suspension on administrative grounds on Sunday. The action has been initiated against Model Town assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Parminder Singh and inspector Ravinder Singh, station house officer (SHO) of the division number 6 police station, for "dereliction" of duty and "not following the standard-operating procedure" while handling the situation.
Commissioner of police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa said both the suspended police officials adopted a lackadaisical approach as they didn't take proactive steps to stop such criminal acts. "They have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. The departmental action will be initiated," Randhawa said.
In the wee hours of Saturday, two unidentified miscreants opened indiscriminate fire outside the house of a veterinary doctor in Santokpura area. Despite high alert in the city, another masked assailant fired four rounds outside a prominent IVF hospital in Mota Singh Nagar of the district.
"We have got some important leads about the incidents which were not inter-linked. In the preliminary investigation, it came to the fore that the accused in both cases sped towards Amritsar after committing the crime," Randhawa said.
The victims, whose premises were fired at, claimed that they neither got any extortion call nor had any personal enmity. The police commissioner stated that officials were yet to ascertain the reason behind the firings.
The first incident took place at 1.40 am, according to CCTV footage, wherein one of the assailants was seen firing nearly 10 shots at the residence of veterinarian Yashpal, who is currently posted in Moga. The second accused filmed the incident on his mobile phone. Bullet marks were spotted on the outer wall of the house, the main gate and the doctor's car parked outside.
The second incident took place at 9.45 pm when a youth parked his bike near Vardhman IVF Hospital and opened indiscriminate fire, damaging the glass door of the house-cum-clinic. The whole incident was recorded in the CCTV installed outside the doctor's residence....
