9 booked for trying to induce conversions with bribes: Police
Haldwani, May 6 -- Nine people were booked on Monday evening in Udham Singh Nagar for allegedly trying to convert villagers by luring them with promises of money and other gifts, police said on Tuesday.
Officers said that the matter involved the registration of two counter FIRs. The first was registered by a man identified as Sohan Singh, who alleged that a man identified as Gauri Singh had constructed a hall for the conduct of Christian missionary activities near his home in Navinagar village.
The complaint alleged that a large scale conversion event was held in the village on April 5. He alleged that villagers were offered Rs.5 lakh as inducement for conversion and were threatened when they refused.
It added that the complainant was threatened after posting about the matter on the social media page of Hindu right wing group Bajrang Dal.
Meanwhile, Gauri Singh lodged a complaint alleging that a group of people broke into his house, assaulted members of his family, behaved inappropriately with women present, and issued death threats on April 19.
Nanakmatta Station House Officer Manju Pandey said that cases have been registered based on complaints from both parties and the matter is under investigation. Additional district magistrate Pankaj Upadhyay said that a meeting was held with public representatives and local residents to hear grievances related to the alleged conversion activities....
