Ranchi, June 27 -- Eight members of a music band died after the pick-up van they were travelling in collided head-on with a coal-laden truck late on Thursday in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, police said. According to police, the band members were heading from Ramgarh to Muzaffarpur to perform in a Moharram procession. The accident occurred around 11.30 pm on the Ramgarh-Bokaro highway (NH-23) near Barlong Budhbazar under Rajrappa Police Station limits, police said. Seven people died on the spot while one died on the way to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, police said. The deceased have been identified as Anod Kumar (31), Hemant Kumar Mahto (25), Pappu Karmali (18), Pawan Karmali (23), Ashok (45), Shakti Ram (34), David Karmali (22) and Manish Kumar (23). All were Ramgarh residents, a police officer said. Ramgarh SP Mukesh Kumar Lunayat said that primary investigation suggested the crash occurred when the coal-laden truck was overtaking another truck and failed to see the pickup van coming from the opposite side. He said a special investigation team (SIT) was constituted to determine the exact reason. "A four-member SIT including a technical expert of the National Highway Authority of India has been constituted to ascertain exact reason behind the collision. Prima facie it appears the collision took place after a coal-laden truck was overtaking another truck unaware of the pickup van coming from the opposite side. The truck driver could not be arrested so far but its owner has been identified. A probe is on," he said....
