BENGALURU, July 10 -- Seven people were killed and two others were injured after the multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district early on Thursday, police said, adding that the victims were friends who were on a pilgrimage and leisure trip. The collision occurred around 2 am in the Arabail Ghat section near Balagar Cross on the stretch between Yellapur and Ankola, they said. According to police, the group, all gig workers from Dharwad, started their journey on Wednesday night and were travelling to Dharmasthala and Chikkamagaluru. Uttara Kannada superintendent of police (SP) MN Deepan told HT: "A Tempo Cruiser travelling from Yellapur towards Ankola collided head-on with an oncoming lorry at around 2 am, killing seven occupants of the vehicle and leaving two others seriously injured." The deceased were identified as tempo driver Sanjay Angadi (48), Basavaraj Kanakammanavar (48), Abhishek Eshwar (28), Akshay (26), Abhishek (26), Shivaraj Madivalar (22), and Manjunath Chulaki (33). Police said all of them died at the scene because of the severity of the impact. Meanwhile, Naveen (24) and Channappa Kalaghatagi (28), who sustained injuries were rushed to a private hospital in Hubballi. "They are out of danger," Deepan said. The bodies were later shifted for post-mortem examinations and will be handed over to the families after legal formalities are completed, police added.
