Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- Four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student in a forested area near her college campus in Durgapur, West Bengal, late on October 10, police said on Sunday afternoon. A local court remanded three of them in police custody for 10 days, while the fourth one will be produced before a court on Monday. Originally from Jaleswar in Odisha, the second-year MBBS student is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital on her college campus. According to the victim's parents, their daughter was "abandoned" by the friend and later dragged into a forest by a group of men, who she said threatened to kill her if she "dared to shout". The men took her mobile phone and Rs.200 before fleeing the scene. "Security camera footage at the medical college showed the victim and her male friend leaving the campus around 7.54 pm. The male student returned around 8.42 pm and was seen loitering around. He left again at 8.48 pm and returned with the victim around 9.30 pm," a police official said, requesting anonymity. "The victim said the culprits called up her friend from her phone after the rape but kept the device saying it would be returned only if she paid Rs.3,000. It was seized from the accused after their arrest," the officer added. Speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said: "We take cases like these very seriously in Bengal. Three persons have been arrested and investigation is on. But how could the student leave the campus at night? It is a forest area. The private medical college must take care of its students." The police have identified the three arrested accused as Apu Bauri (21); Firdous Shiekh (23); Sheikh Riazuddin (32)....
