4 cops face action as elderly dies amid raid
Rudrapur, March 30 -- Four police personnel, including a sub-inspector posted at Nanakmatta police station, were attached to the police line in Rudrapur late on Saturday night after an elderly woman died in suspicious circumstances during a police raid, police said on Sunday. Ajay Ganpati, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Udham Singh Nagar, said the police team had gone to arrest a wanted accused in a rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) case.
"During the raid an elderly woman died and her relatives alleged that the police team had scuffled and misbehaved with family members," Ganpati said.
According to police, the team had gone to Siddha Navadiya village under Nanakmatta police station to arrest 27-year-old Kuldeep Singh, who is wanted in a POCSO case. When the police team reached his house, family members allegedly opposed the raid, claiming they had already evicted Kuldeep Singh from the property and severed ties with him.
Police said that during the confrontation an 80-year-old woman, identified as Sukhdev Kaur, fell down. Her relatives rushed her to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Angry villagers and relatives staged a protest outside Nanakmatta police station with the woman's body. Additional police force and personnel of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) were deployed from Khatima, Sitarganj and Pulbhatta to control the situation....
