BATHINDA, July 9 -- The district police have arrested the third accused in a cross-border espionage network that used a hidden spy camera to monitor military movements in Bathinda. Simranjit Singh, alias Nimbu,22, a crane operator from Amritsar's Sarai village, was apprehended in Batala on Tuesday, following the June 10 arrests of his co-accused Ashok Singh and Akashdeep Singh from same village. According to police, the solar-powered CCTV camera had been operational since March, streaming live video feeds of sensitive military and police movements to unidentified handlers based in Pakistan and Canada. The surveillance operation directly targeted the Bathinda military station, which serves as strategic headquarters for Indian Army's 10 Corps (Chetak Corps) and ranks as one of the largest military bases in the country. Superintendent of police (investigation) Jasmeet Singh Sahiwal said preliminary interrogation linked the operation to Nimbu's previous employment in Dubai. While working there, Nimbu reportedly established contact with an individual who later directed him to set up surveillance system. He was paid Rs.28,000 through two UPI digital transactions to complete installation. Specialised cyber teams are currently analysing the transaction history to identify the source of the funds.The security breach was discovered on June 9, when local police spotted the camera hidden in an isolated zone along the Bathinda-Fazilka stretch of National Highway 7. A case was registered under the Official Secrets Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Subsequent investigations established that Ashok's identity documents were used to purchase the SIM card inside the device, while Akashdeep Singh assisted in mounting the hardware on the outskirts of the city....
