Ludhiana, June 1 -- Three young men drowned in the SirhindCanal on the Ghawaddi-Khanpur road near Dehlon on Sunday evening after a swimming outing turned tragic, police said. According to officials, four youths had gone to the canal around 4.30 pm for bathing and diving. During the activity, they reportedly slipped into deep water and were swept away by the strong current. Locals rushed to the spot and managed to rescue one youth immediately, while the police were alerted. Deputy commissioner of police (Ludhiana Rural) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said despite rescue efforts, two youths - Vinay Kumar and Ajay Kashyap - were declared dead at the spot. Another victim, Varinder Singh alias Bindu, was taken to hospital but later succumbed during treatment. One youth survived the incident. The victims were residents of Manjit Nagar and Abdullapur Basti, aged between 20 and 22 years. The bodies have been sent to the Ludhiana civil hospital for postmortem.
