Amritsar, July 9 -- Three operatives of the proscribed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) were arrested with six hand grenades and 12 sophisticated pistols as the counter intelligence (CI) wing, Amritsar, of Punjab Police busted an illegal arms and explosives smuggling module in Amritsar, police chief Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday. Those arrested have been identified as Chintu, Jobanpreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, all residents of Kakkar village in Amritsar. The recovered cache includes eight .30 bore pistols, four 9 mm pistols and nine live cartridges. Police also impounded the car (i20) with registration number PB-13-5454 allegedly used to transport the consignment. The DGP said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were operating on the directions of a foreign-based smuggler backed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and BKI operatives. The arrested accused were planning to carry out activities intended to disturb public peace across various cities in the border state, he said. Sharing operational details, he said that police teams from CI Amritsar had received reliable inputs that the trio had recently received a huge consignment of explosives, arms and ammunition from the Ajnala area on the instructions of their handlers and are expected to deliver the consignment to other associates Acting swiftly, police teams laid a checkpoint in the Amritsar area and intercepted the i20 car in which they were travelling, he said, adding that during search, six hand grenades and 12 pistols were recovered from them.
