11 Haryana drains dumping 300 MLDof untreated effluents into Yamuna
ROHTAK, July 10 -- Despite Haryana's efforts to clean Yamuna, around 300 million litres per day (MLD) of untreated sewage and industrial effluent continues to flow into the river through 11 major drains across the state.
Minutes of a high-level meeting chaired by Haryana State Pollution Control Board(HSPCB) chairman VinayPratap Singh on June 5, accessed by HT, show that the state's drain-wise action plan for Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) has been delayed due to land acquisition disputes, delayed tenders, pending approvals, and poor inter-departmental coordination.
The review noted that the Dhanaura Escape drain in Yamunanagar continues to discharge 66 MLD of untreated wastewater out of a total flow of 105 MLD. A 77-MLD STP and a 19.5-MLD CETP are under construction and are slated to be completed by mid-2027.
The Drain number 2, covering Karnal and Panipat, carries 224.9 MLD wastewater, of which 43.9 MLD remains untreated. Six micro STPs, funded by HSPCB, have been planned for 10-12 villages in the catchment area. Of these, two STPs at Samalkha are delayed because of tendering and land issues.
Overall, 37 micro-STPs are planned across seven districts, with land available for 27 while 10 projects remain stalled as land has not been acquired.
For the Leg-2 drain Gurugram, officials noted that 179 MLD of effluent is discharged, including 50 MLD untreated. Two STPs of 100 MLD capacity each have been proposed, and the tender is scheduled to be floated shortly. Officials also said that unauthorised residential colonies in Gurugram are discharging approximately 27 MLD of wastewater into the box-type drain. A separate tender has been invited for the identification of these discharge points and the desilting of the drain.
The review noted that Leg 3 Drain in Gururam carries 282 MLD of wastewater, of which 55 MLD is untreated. Pollution-control works for the drain are targeted for completion by June 30.
A 100-MLD STP has also been proposed at Behrampur, Gurugram, while land transfer for a proposed 9-MLD CETP at Sector-37, Gurugram, is pending approval.
In Sonepat, Drain No. 6 carries 170 MLD of wastewater, of which 60 MLD remains untreated. Pollution-control works are scheduled for completion by December 2028. KCB Drain discharges 57.6 MLD of which 17.6 MLD is untreated.
On Bahadurgarh's Mungeshpur drain, officials said a fresh verification of wastewater generation and treatment data is required.
Officials stated that Drain No 8, extending from Panipat to Jhajjar, before joining the Najafgarh Drain, carries only treated wastewater.
HSPCB chairman said that out of 11 major drains discharging into Yamuna, seven have shown considerable improvement in water quality over the past year.
"The HSPCB is coordinating with all concerned departments to complete Yamuna Action Plan projects on schedule. The proposed STPs and CETPs are expected to be commissioned by December 31 next year. The state government is coordinating with the Centre, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh to clean the Yamuna and make it pollution-free," he said....
