Bhopal, Sept. 7 -- / Eleven people died, and 84 fell ill after consuming spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, police said. Police added that 20 people from Sagar and Uttar Pradesh's Lalitpur, suspected of supplying the hooch, were booked on Sunday for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while 10 of them were arrested. Chief minister Mohan Yadav called the incident "tragic and unfortunate" and ordered strict action. "I have directed the minister in-charge and officials to conduct an immediate inquiry. No one found guilty in this matter will be spared," he said. Meanwhile, health minister and deputy chief minister Rajendra Shukla reached Sagar to investigate the matter. On the CM's directions, deputy commissioner Neerja Srivastava was transferred to Gwalior headquarters, while three excise officials - assistant commissioner Kirti Dubey, assistant district excise officer Dilip Khandate, and sub-inspector Roshni Ureti - were suspended. Superintendent of police Anurag Sujania suspended Gugra outpost in-charge Puran Ladia and Banda police station in-charge Rajendra Singh Kushwaha. Chief medical and health officer Devesh Pateriya confirmed methyl alcohol poisoning as the cause. "Patients are coming from three to four villages. One man was airlifted to AIIMS Bhopal in serious condition. The cause of death is methyl alcohol poisoning, but we are waiting for the detailed autopsy report," he said. District collector Pratibha Pal met affected families, reviewed hospital care, and appealed to villagers with symptoms of vomiting, headache, or fever to seek immediate medical attention. Police arrested 10 men accused of supplying spurious liquor from Lalitpur and Sagar, said SP Sujania. "A case was registered against 20 people, and investigation is underway." Excise teams seized bottles for forensic testing. "Preliminary investigations revealed a racket in Lalitpur manufacturing spurious liquor, packaging it with counterfeit labels, caps, and QR codes, and supplying it at low prices to Banda villages. Police are tracing the network and sending samples for examination," SP Sujania said....
