'I took therapy to learn to deal with myself'
India, Oct. 10 -- A
ctor Taapsee Pannu admits that she once believed therapy was only for people battling serious mental health issues. "I thought one approaches a therapist only when touching the clinical depression stage," says the actor, last seen in Gandhari. "But I realised mental health is also about being in the present and finding peace in what you have. If you aren't at peace, you constantly feel unstable, and that's what showbiz can make you feel." On World Mental Health Day today, the 39-year-old recalls how the Covid lockdown forced her to confront emotions she had long avoided. "Earlier I would channel my anxiety into physical activity by engaging in more work or going outside and engaging in some activity or sport to avoid facing my anxiety," she says. Unable to escape into work or travel, she eventually sought therapy. "I became so vulnerable and sensitive that I took some therapy sessions to learn the art of dealing with myself without running away."
The actor, who married former Danish badminton player Mathias Boe in 2024, also opens up about the toll of online trolling and constant public scrutiny. "I was trying this impossible task to make everyone happy. I got burnt out, and it took me years to accept the situation," she says, adding, "I realised I wasted years trying to appease trolls rather than spending that time working on myself as an actor or human being."
Choosing to distance herself from social media, she explains, "I had the choice of being inactive on social media or being battered mentally, so I chose the first option."...
