India, Sept. 6 -- J im Thornton, 61, the longtime announcer of Wheel of Fortune, one of America's best-known television game shows, has been fired after Sony Pictures Television completed an investigation into allegations stemming from a May flight to Los Angeles. The controversy dates to a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles. Reports said a fellow passenger photographed Thornton apparently using a chatroom that describes itself as a support forum for people with paedophilic thoughts. Images appeared to show him typing in the chatroom, while timestamps suggested it remained open for at least 57 minutes. It has, however, not been established that Thornton authored any of the disturbing messages visible on screen. Law enforcement met the flight after it landed at Los Angeles International Airport, but Thornton was neither arrested nor charged. His attorney, Allison Hart, has denied wrongdoing, saying Thornton had been looking for mental-health support resources linked to his suicide-prevention advocacy and entered the site by mistake. She said he left after realising what the forum was about and maintained that he "did nothing wrong". Sony confirmed on Friday that Thornton's employment had been terminated "effective immediately", days after suspending him.
