Vikram's Lar Gibbon video triggers probe into exotic wildlife trade
India, Aug. 12 -- Actor Chiyaan Vikram's now-deleted Instagram Reel featuring a Lar Gibbon has sparked a probe by the state forest department into the animal's presence at a private residence in Chennai and renewed attention on the illegal exotic wildlife trade in Tamil Nadu.
Lar Gibbons are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix I and cannot be acquired without the requisite CITES permissions and other documentation. According to a FPJ report, Vikram's daughter's father-in-law, businessman CK Ranganathan, had officially purchased the animal in June. The state forest department, however, has not confirmed these claims, with the investigation still underway.
