India, Sept. 6 -- S inger Shreya Ghoshal has often spoken about the objectification of women in Bollywood songs. Recently, she opened up about having to reject several songs because of their lyrics, and some of them later went on to become popular. When asked about saying no to sleazy songs with inappropriate lyrics on The Male Feminist Podcast, she said, "The lyrics are one thing. There is also a composition and singing style. There were some popular songs which did well, but I said no." Calling it "patriarchal", the 42-year-old added, "After a point, only those types of songs were given to female singers. The rest are male songs, and there are some romantic duets. It is a slightly patriarchal, gender-based thing. Now, because of independent music, it is changing. But, I feel it is still very male-heavy. I've spoken strongly about it earlier, and I don't mind if it's taken in a good way or bad way." Last year, during a podcast with YouTuber-actor Lilly Singh, Shreya admitted that she had sung some raunchy songs in her career, including Chikni Chameli (Agneepath, 2011). She had said, "There is a fine line between being sensual and objectifying women. The reason I've become more conscious over time is that I see little girls singing these songs without understanding their meaning... it doesn't sound right." HTC...
