India, Aug. 17 -- Singer Britney Spears has warned fans to "be careful with your bodies" after a recent Botox treatment allegedly left her with a droopy left eye. The 44-year-old shared the experience on Instagram last week, saying a doctor had put "so much Botox in this left eye that it drooped down like that". She said the effect lasted about "four weeks" and was "so embarrassing".
A droopy eyelid after Botox, known as eyelid ptosis, can occur if the toxin spreads to a nearby muscle that lifts the eyelid. "Injection point, depth, dose and individual facial anatomy and technique can all influence this," says dermatologist Dr Nivedita Dadu.
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) says eyelid drooping can occur in 1-5% of cases and typically resolves within three to four weeks as the toxin wears off.
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks nerve signals to targeted muscles, reducing their movement. While it is widely used cosmetically to smooth facial wrinkles, it is also used medically for conditions including chronic migraine, cervical dystonia and excessive sweating.
Botulinum toxin is among the most commonly performed non-surgical aesthetic procedures globally. In India, 76,720 such procedures were performed by plastic surgeons in 2024, according to ISAPS.
