Mogging shines as Collins Dictionary's Word of the Year
India, Nov. 5 -- The comprehensive dictionary of the English language, Collins Dictionary, has named mogging - a slang term meaning to outshine someone or something - its Word of the Year on Tuesday. Often used by young people in a playful, ironic way to describe being upstaged, the term has entered mainstream use, recording a 210% rise in usage in 2026, according to dictionary experts.
The term that has been around for nearly a decade was originally used in bodybuilding circles to describe someone physically superior and has now taken on a new meaning: outperforming someone.
Alex Beecroft, Collins managing director, said, "It's a great example of how Gen Z and Gen Alpha have adopted a word and turned it into humorous slang, making the language their own," he said.
