India, Sept. 20 -- A t 24, Tamil-Canadian actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is already one of the most recognisable young South Asian faces on global screens, after breaking out with Never Have I Ever. Now, in Netflix's Best Of The Best, set in the world of competitive collegiate Bollywood-fusion dance and featuring Indian classical forms such as Bharatanatyam, she says South Asian representation has evolved: "In recent years... It's personality first, and then the non-changeable factors of their cultural backgrounds is additional information." That visibility came early for Ramakrishnan, who was just 18 when her debut show turned her into a global name. "Never Have I Ever Season One came out in Covid and because everything was online, it kind of felt a little fake at first. It was right after Tiger King, Love is Blind and Too Hot to Handle. So, everyone's bars were really low, and we slid right in there with a nice little comedy that's actually a story about grief." Ramakrishnan also credits actor-producer Mindy Kaling with helping her navigate all the sudden spotlight. "I got the biggest gift in having the best first boss in the world with my icon and one of the first true faces and pioneers of South Asian representation in the West, Mindy Kaling.
