hen it comes to everyday lip care and beauty, lip tints and lip balms are among the most popular picks, but it's easy to confuse the two. While they may look similar at first glance, they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference can help you choose what works best for your needs and lifestyle.
Lip balm is primarily designed to moisturise, making it more of a skincare essential than a cosmetic product. Most formulas contain ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, or petroleum jelly that help lock in moisture. Many also include SPF to guard against sun damage.
While some may have a slight tint or gloss, the core purpose of lip balms is hydration.
Lip tint, on the other hand, is a cosmetic product which comes in come in liquid or gel forms and is designed to add a wash of colour to your lips. It delivers a natural, long-lasting stain without the heaviness of traditional lipsticks.
Unlike lip balms, lip tints are more about aesthetics than hydration. They create a 'no-makeup' makeup look, making them a go-to for those who prefer a subtle, fresh finish.
Lip balms are more nourishing than lip tints, but both can be part of your everyday routine; one for hydration, the other for a hint of colour. In terms of longevity, lip tints generally last longer than lip balms, says dermatologist Dr Shilpa Patil.
"The lip tints act as a colourant, often containing alcohol, to sink into the lips. Lip balms are the moisturisers that are made up of oils, waxes or butter," says Dr Patil....
