Kriti Sanon says female actors are made to feel 'less' on film sets
India, July 5 -- Fresh off the success of Cocktail 2, actor Kriti Sanon has spoken about the gender bias she has faced in the film industry, saying female actors are often "taken for granted" and judged differently from male stars. Speaking to Lilly Singh on her YouTube channel, Kriti said that while opportunities for women have improved since she started out, unequal treatment still persists.
Recalling her early years, Kriti said films were largely male-led, with women often limited to romantic roles. She added that although better-written parts for women are now being made, everyday bias continues on film sets.
"When a female actor asks questions, it's like, 'Kitne sawal poochti hai yeh'. But when a male star asks the same questions, he's termed 'very involved'," she said, sharing an incident from her own experience, "When I asked the same questions, I was told, 'Don't overanalyse it'. But when it came from the guy, they were like, 'Okay, this can be done'."
Kriti also cited differences in how actors are treated behind the scenes. "I am not bothered even if I get a smaller room or car, but don't make me feel less," she said, adding that assistant directors often "call the girls first on set" because they are "a little more scared of the male actors" and "sometimes take female actors for granted."
