India, April 30 -- In the bustling marketplace of West Bandra's Bazaar Road, an iconic musician can often be heard playing the trumpet. Joe Vessoaker aka Joe Bandwalla is one of the city's most popular trumpeters, having played in films such as Khal Nayak (1993) and Dev.D (2009), and worked with music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Amit Trivedi, and late Bappi Lahiri. On International Jazz Day today, he opens up on how the jazz scene has changed over the decades. "We are losing old musicians in our industry; only a few can play all seven jazz instruments now. The electronic instruments are taking over," he tells us. In the golden age, as he calls it, Joe would play "bagpipes, trumpets, trombones, violins and the symphonies for years in films". His favourites include Spanish trumpeter Andrea Motis. "I have seen the real beauty of music in my life. But today, it is not what it used to be," the musician laments. However, even at 76, Joe insists that his mission is to never give up: "I would very much like to see jazz bands in Mumbai. But music has no end, and it will only keep getting better when you practice. So even if I have to play alone or as a soloist, I will never give up."...
