Some viewers took to social media to criticise the casting, with comments calling the casting "the worst downgrade," while others accused the show of attempting to be "woke." "I've been told, 'Quit or I'll murder you,'" the actor told The Times in a profile published Saturday. "...while I hope I'll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job," he added. "Many people put their lives on the line in their work... The character of Snape was originally portrayed by the late actor Alan Rickman in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, who went on to portray the wizard throughout the eight-film run.
