Billy Joel condemns upcoming biopic; refuses to share life and music rights
India, May 21 -- American musician Billy Joel, popularly known as The Piano Man after his 1973 album, has condemned the upcoming biopic chronicling his formative years. Titled Billy & Me, the film will be helmed by editor-director John Ottman and unfold through the eyes of first manager, Irwin Mazur, reported Variety.
Casting for the project is currently underway, with production slated for this year across Canada and USA. The production team has secured the life rights of Mazur, as well as Joel's longtime friend, drummer and video director Jon Small. Small is also on board as a consultant, co-executive producer and second unit director for the film.
However, Joel himself has not authorised the project. His spokesperson said in a statement to the publication, "Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel's life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project. Billy Joel has not authorised or supported this project in any capacity, and any attempt to move forward without it would be both legally and professionally misguided." HTC...
