Arshdeep's 'dark' joke sparks racism row online
India, May 16 -- Cricketer Arshdeep Singh is facing heavy backlash online after a viral video featuring fellow India teammate Tilak Varma triggered accusations of racism from a section of social media users.
In the clip, recorded ahead of Thursday's Indian Premier League clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala, Arshdeep is heard calling Tilak, "Oye Andhere", before jokingly asking, "Sunscreen nahi lagayi?" Moments later, pointing towards another MI player, Naman Dhir, he says in Punjabi, "Aa hai Punjab da asli noor, te aa hai nakli."
While Tilak appeared to take the interaction sportingly in the clip, several users online criticised the remarks as insensitive. "You may be friends, but as a role model, you just cannot make such racist remarks," one user wrote.
Former India cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan also reacted strongly to the controversy, calling for Arshdeep to be banned for the remainder of IPL 2026. "The players today should be hit where it hurts the most," he wrote on X. HTC...
