Andreeva seals maiden Slam as Chwalinska scripts qualifier fairytale
India, June 8 -- Nineteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva clinched her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, defeating Poland's Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the French Open final at Roland Garros.
The Russian teenager, one of the breakout stars of the season, weathered early pressure in windy Paris before settling into rhythm from the baseline, controlling rallies and steadily pulling away to secure a composed straight-sets victory.
Andreeva said the mental aspect of her preparation played a key role in her breakthrough. She revealed she worked with her sports psychologist ahead of both the semi-final and final to manage nerves in high-pressure moments. "I've actually talked to my psychologist before the semi-final match and before the final match," she said, adding it helped her stay "in the right state of mind" for the biggest matches of her career.
For the Polish player, the final capped a remarkable dream run at Roland Garros. The 24-year-old qualifier, ranked outside the top 100 at the start of the tournament, battled through three qualifying rounds before defeating multiple higher-ranked opponents to reach her first Grand Slam final.
Her run marks a career-defining breakthrough at the highest level, taking her from qualifier to Grand Slam finalist on one of tennis' biggest stages.HTC...
