India, July 29 -- What began as an attempt to rebuild her life has culminated in a historic sporting milestone. Forty-year-old para athlete Sharmila Dhankar became India's first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold medallist on Tuesday after winning the women's F57 shot put at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a season-best throw of 9.81m. The effort also ended India's 20-year wait for a para-athletics medal at the Games. Born in Chitrauli village in Haryana's Mahendragarh district to a farming family, Dhankar contracted polio in her left leg at the age of two after a high fever, leaving her with a permanent disability. Her mother was visually impaired, and the family's financial constraints kept her deprived of timely medical treatment. Married at 18, she endured years of domestic abuse linked to dowry demands before being forced to leave her marital home with her two daughters in her mid-20s. Dhankar's life changed after she married Ajit Singh, a mason who encouraged her to pursue sport. Under the guidance of coach Tek Chand, a former Indian Paralympian in the throws, Dhankar took up para-athletics at 34 in the F57 category. She announced herself by winning gold and setting a national record of 7.40m at the 2021 National Para Athletics Championships on her debut. She went on to finish fourth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a national-record throw of 8.43m, won gold at the 2025 Indian Open Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru with 9.77m, and also struck gold at the 2026 Fazza International Para Athletics Championships before her Glasgow triumph. In Glasgow, Dhankar delivered the defining performance of her career. Her 9.81m throw secured India's first Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold, while compatriot Shilpa K Shyla was later upgraded to bronze after a successful Indian protest, giving India its first-ever double podium finish in para-athletics at the Games....
