'I still get all excited about stunts'
India, Aug. 20 -- Actor Jason Statham, 59, is known for his hardcore action films, from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000) to the Transporter (2002-2015) and Fast & Furious franchises. He returns to the genre with Mutiny, an upcoming action-thriller directed by Jean-Francois Richet, with Statham starring and also serving as a producer. For the actor, the film's stunts, practical action and Richet's hands-on approach to filmmaking are among its biggest draws.
Statham, who has always been associated with intense action sequences in his films, is appreciative of the people who make those scenes possible. "For me, the stunt crew are the unsung heroes. They are the essence of all the excitement that we get to see on screen. They are the guys that dream it up, that put it together and make sure it's safe," he says.
The actor admits he still gets excited about intense action sequences. "It's a little bit childish, but I get all excited about the stunts and how we're going to do them," says Statham.
Speaking about Richet, known for Mesrine: Killer Instinct (2008) and Plane (2023), Statham says his clear vision and distinct style made him a strong fit for the project. "He is a great director, has his own style, which I love. I was massively impressed with his earlier films," he says, adding, "He knows exactly what he wants, so he's very fast."
Richet's preference for practical filmmaking was another factor that appealed to Statham. Instead of relying heavily on special effects, the director wanted to capture as much of the action as possible in real locations, including aboard a container ship.
"He wants to shoot as much in camera and through the lens of reality as possible and doesn't want to rely on CGI. I tip my hat to him for that," Statham says. Filming at sea came with its own challenges, but the actor believes the real setting gave the film an atmosphere that film sets could not replicate. "You're at sea, you're smelling the fumes, and you feel the rusty steel; it all adds to the texture of the atmosphere," he shares....
