'I don't want to be defined by one kind of image'
India, Oct. 7 -- T
en years after making her Bollywood debut with M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), Disha Patani looks back at the decade as "a period of discovery". "Everything was new to me when I did that film," says Patani, who played MS Dhoni's girlfriend Priyanka Jha in the Neeraj Pandey-directorial, which featured (late) Sushant Singh Rajput as the cricket icon. She adds, "I was learning how a set works, how to face the camera, how to understand a character and how to take direction."
Back then, she says, she was "very instinctive". A decade on, Patani feels she understands her craft better and is "more comfortable trusting" herself. "I never want to reach a point where I feel like I know everything or that I can do something without putting in the work," she asserts.
Since the 2016 film, Patani has featured in films including Baaghi 2 (2018), Bharat (2019), Malang (2020), Yodha (2024), Kalki 2898 AD (2024) and Awarapan 2. Ask her what she wants to explore next and she says, "I'd love to do roles where the physicality or the glamour isn't the focus and the character itself carries the film...I don't want to be defined by one particular kind of role or image."
For her next decade in the industry, Patani says she wants to work with different filmmakers and explore languages and genres: "I think as an actor, the exciting part is being able to surprise yourself and hopefully surprise the audience as well. There is still a lot I want to learn and explore."...
