'Akshay asked if I'd direct Bhagam Bhag 2, I said no'
India, Oct. 14 -- Filmmaker Priyadarshan has had a mixed year professionally, with Bhooth Bangla emerging as a success while Haiwaan underperformed. With several of his films spawning sequels, another of his comedies, Bhagam Bhag (2006), starring Akshay Kumar (inset) Paresh Rawal and Govinda, was recently announced to get a second instalment. However, Priyadarshan will not be directing it.
The filmmaker, 69, explains that he does not want to revisit an iconic film unless he has something new or better to offer. He says,"The reason for doing part 2 should be that it is better than part 1... Unless you have a much better story, you shouldn't do it."
He adds, "With sequels, they are selling the value of the first film. They are not making a film; they are making a project, and I am not interested in projects. Even with Bhagam Bhag, Akshay asked me, 'Are you interested in directing?' I said no. Let other people make sequels of my films."
Does the same thinking explain his decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3? "That has a lot of other complications," he says. On whether the third instalment of the comedy franchise will ever materialise, he is less optimistic: "I don't think it will ever get made."...
