Sri Lanka, Oct. 20 -- Two young men have sustained serious injuries after being hit by a speeding lorry in the centre of Thalawakele town in Sri Lanka's Central Province early on Monday morning (20)

The incident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m., took place while the victims were celebrating Deepavali by lighting firecrackers.

Police report that the lorry, which was reportedly travelling at high speed, struck the two youths and immediately fled the scene.

The injured were initially taken to the Lindula Divisional Hospital but have since been transferred to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital for specialist treatment due to the severity of their condition.

Police have since apprehended the suspected driver.
