Sri Lanka, Dec. 13 -- Panadura South Police have arrested two brothers from the same family over an alleged theft of gold chains, valued at nearly Rs 200,000, snatched from the necks of two women travelling on the road.
The arrested suspects, aged 36 and 26, are residents of Moonawalawatta Road, Kiriberiya, Panadura, and are reported to be drug addicts.
Police stated that the suspects confessed they decided to resort to chain snatching to save their mother's land.
Their mother had previously mortgaged the land for Rs 100,000 to secure bail for the brothers when they were incarcerated on previous drug charges.
Facing the imminent loss of the land due to their inability to repay the loan, they chose this desperate measure.
