Sri Lanka, March 2 -- Every district in the country contains between four thousand and five thousand individuals living with total blindness, according to specialist Dr Kusum Ratnayake.

The former President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka and coordinator of 'Gift of Vision' noted that a 2013 survey identified 2.7% of the population as suffering from blindness.

These details were shared during a media briefing for an eye camp held at the Gampola Teaching Hospital.

Organised to mark the hospital's centenary and assist victims of Cyclone Ditva, the initiative performed 500 surgeries and provided lenses to patients.
